Before I started in the baby and children's jewelry business, I had never heard of screwbacks. When I received my first inquiry about them, I thought they were those old-fashioned screw-down earrings our mothers and grandmothers, whose ears were not pierced, used.

But screwbacks are not this style of earring. They are made or pierced ears and have a normal rod which goes through the ear lobe, but with this new type of earring, the pointy end is not left bare. For mothers concerned about their baby's or children's safety, the capstyle screwback solves the problem. They do not need to worry about the point poking into their child for example, when they sleep. But the best aspect of screwbacks is the security.

The rod on a screwback earring is like a screw, and the "back" or "nut" as it's sometimes called, screws on down the shaft of the rod. It can be screwed down tightly so that little fingers fiddling, cannot remove the back. Little fingers fiddling with their earrings, is the main reason children lose one of their earrings. So many mothers tell me they have six earrings in their daughter's jewelry box, and none of them match!

If the back simply pulls off, it's not long before the earring drops out and is lost. If the earrings are good quality sterling silver or 10K or 14K gold, the cost of these losses can add up considerably. I frequently get enquiries from mothers asking if I'll sell them just one of a pair of earrings. Screwbacks solve this problem.
Of course, not all children fiddle with their earrings and babies. For example, if babies have their ears pierced at a very young age, they do not fiddle with them, and simply never feel their earrings, once their piercing is healed. It's toddlers and pre-schoolers who tend to fiddle the most, especially those with a new piercing. Therefore, not all mothers have this problem with their children. But it's not only the child fiddling with her earrings that causes a loss of an earring. Often, it's when a mother is removing her child's clothing, pulling a top off over her child or baby's head, that a regular earring is lost. The clothing pulls on the earring back, tugging it off the rod. Mother may not notice this at the time. It's later, when the earring is noticed missing, by which time, it may be long gone.

For these reasons, children's screwback earrings are invaluable, and ultimately save them money on new earrings.
